First, Which Type of Pump Do You Need?
- Surface (jet) pump: sits above the water and sucks it up. Good for shallow wells, tanks and boosting pressure. It can only lift water about 7 to 9 m by suction (less at high altitude such as Nairobi).
- Submersible pump: sits in the water and pushes it up. Used for tanks, sumps, drainage, shallow wells and, in slim 3" and 4" versions, boreholes.
- Borehole pump: a long, thin submersible made to fit the borehole casing (the ones below need at least a 110 mm borehole).
- Multistage pump: several impellers in series give high pressure. Used for apartments, irrigation, RO plants and boiler feed.
- Engine (petrol) pump: for farms and sites with no power: irrigation, filling tanks from a river, dewatering.
Rule of thumb: if the water is deeper than about 7 m below the pump, a surface pump will not work. Use a submersible or borehole pump.

A 2" pump suits most small farms. A 3" pump moves much more water for flood irrigation or dewatering, but it uses more fuel and needs bigger pipes.
How to Size a Pump: Flow and Head
- Flow: how much water you need, in litres per minute or mĀ³/h. Count the taps, showers or sprinklers that run at the same time.
- Head: the total height the pump must push the water (from the water level to the highest outlet) plus friction losses in the pipes. Long, thin pipes add a lot of friction.
- Power supply: most homes have single phase (240 V). The biggest pumps need 3-phase power.
- Water quality: sandy or dirty water needs a pump rated for sand or silt. Hot water needs a pump rated for the temperature.
Always read the pump curve: a pump gives less flow the higher it has to push. A pump that is too small runs all day. One that is far too big wastes power and can run dry.
Protect Your Pump
- Fit a float switch or a pump controller so the pump stops when the tank is empty (dry running kills pumps).
- Use a stabiliser or proper motor protection where the power supply is unstable.
