How to Size a Generator

1. List what must run at the same time and add up the watts (on the label of each appliance).
2. Allow for starting current. Motors (pumps, fridges, compressors) can draw about 3 times their running power for a moment when they start. Size for the biggest motor starting while everything else runs.
3. Convert to kVA. For most small sets, kW ≈ kVA × 0.8. So a 2.8 kVA set gives roughly 2.2 kW.
4. Add about 20% spare so the generator is not run at full load all the time.
