How to Size an Industrial RO Plant

  1. Daily demand: add up the treated water you need per day.
  2. Operating hours: divide by the hours the plant will run. For example, 40,000 L a day over 20 hours needs about 2,000 L/h.
  3. Storage: a treated-water tank covers peak demand, so the plant does not have to match your peak flow.
  4. Water analysis: TDS, hardness, iron, fluoride and silt decide the pre-treatment and the recovery you can safely run.

Recovery rate: an RO plant with 50% recovery needs about 2,000 L of raw water to make 1,000 L of product water. The rest leaves as concentrate (reject). Make sure your borehole or supply can deliver the raw water, and plan where the reject goes.

Pre-treatment Protects the Membranes

RO membranes are the most expensive part to replace. A typical industrial line is: raw water tank → feed pump → sand filter → carbon filter → softener or antiscalant dosing → 5-micron cartridge → high-pressure pump → RO membranes → UV → treated water tank.

Running Costs

  • Electricity for the high-pressure and feed pumps.
  • Consumables: cartridge filters, antiscalant, cleaning chemicals, softener salt, UV lamps.
  • Membrane replacement every few years, depending on water quality and care.

Good pre-treatment and regular cleaning lower all three. See the RO System Maintenance Guide.

Regulations

Drawing water from a borehole needs a permit from the Water Resources Authority (WRA). If you sell or package the water, product standards and certification from KEBS apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an industrial RO plant in Kenya?

H-TECH industrial RO plants on Buy More Mall cost from KSh 929,775 for 1,000 L/h to KSh 12,000,000 for 10,000 L/h.

What size RO plant do I need for a factory?

Divide your daily treated-water demand by the hours the plant will run, and add storage for peaks. A water test is needed to design the pre-treatment.

How much raw water does an RO plant need?

At 50% recovery, about twice the product water. At 65% recovery, about 1.5 times.

How long do RO membranes last?

Often 2 to 5 years in industrial use, depending on pre-treatment, water quality and cleaning.
