Chlorine 65 or Chlorine 90?

Chlorine 65 (calcium hypochlorite) dissolves fast. Use it for regular dosing and to shock the pool after heavy use or rain. It slowly raises calcium and pH.
Chlorine 90 (trichlor) is stronger per kilo and contains stabiliser that stops the sun burning chlorine off. It is acidic and lowers pH over time. Too much stabiliser builds up, so do not use it for every shock.

Target Levels

Widely used guidance, including from the US CDC, is to keep:

Free chlorine: at least 1 ppm, usually 1 to 3 ppm.
pH: 7.2 to 7.8. Chlorine works much better at the lower end of this range.

How to Work Out Your Pool's Volume

Every chemical dose depends on how much water the pool holds:

Rectangular pool: length × width × average depth (in metres) × 1,000 = litres.
Round pool: diameter × diameter × average depth × 785 = litres.

Example: a pool 10 m long, 5 m wide, 1 m deep at one end and 2 m at the other has an average depth of 1.5 m, so it holds 10 × 5 × 1.5 × 1,000 = 75,000 litres (75 m³). Use this figure with the dose on each product label.
