What Size Water Tank Do I Need?

Estimate daily use. Count the people and what the water is for (drinking, cooking, bathing, flushing, laundry, animals, garden). Your water bill in m³ ÷ 30 × 1,000 gives litres per day.
Decide how many days of storage you want: how long the supply usually goes off, or how long the dry spell lasts if you rely on rain.
Multiply: daily use × days = tank size. Round up to the next size.

Example: a home using 400 L a day that wants 5 days of backup needs about 2,000 L. Doubling up with two tanks is fine and lets you clean one while using the other.

A full tank is heavy: 1 litre of water weighs 1 kg, so a full 10,000 L tank weighs about 10 tonnes. The base must be flat, level and strong: concrete or well-compacted ground. For a raised tank, the stand must be designed for the full weight.
Place the tank on a smooth, level base with no stones, which can crack the bottom.
Fit a first-flush diverter or mesh on rainwater inlets to keep leaves and roof dirt out.
Keep the lid closed to stop mosquitoes and algae. Dark tanks let in less light.
Clean the tank at least once a year.
