How to Read the Size Code

The number is the tank size in inches: the first one or two digits are the diameter, the rest is the height. So a 1054 is 10 inches wide and 54 inches tall, and an 844 is 8 by 44 inches. A wider tank treats more water per hour. A taller tank holds more media, so it lasts longer between backwashes or regenerations.

Which Size for Which Filter?

For a filter, the tank diameter sets how much water it can treat, because the water must pass slowly through the media. Typical guidance for a sand (multimedia) or carbon filter:

• 8" tanks (817 to 848): small homes and RO pre-treatment up to about 0.5 m³/h.
• 10" tanks (1035, 1054): about 0.5 to 1 m³/h. A common choice for 250 L/h RO plants and small refilling stations.
• 12" to 13" tanks: about 1 to 1.5 m³/h. Around 500 L/h RO plants.
• 14" to 16" tanks: about 1.5 to 3 m³/h. 1,000 L/h RO plants, hotels and schools.

What Else Does a Filter Need?

2. Media: graded gravel and silica sand, multimedia, activated carbon, or softener resin.
3. A distributor pipe and strainer inside the tank.
4. Enough pump flow for backwashing, which needs more flow than normal running.
