Which Size Goes Where?

• 1¼": wash basins.
• 1½": kitchen sinks, showers and washing machines.
• 2": collecting several basins or sinks, floor drains.
• 3" and 4": toilets (soil pipes) and the main drain to the septic tank or sewer.
• 6": large main drains for blocks and commercial buildings.

Drainage Tips

• Fall: drains must slope steadily towards the outlet. Too flat and waste settles; too steep and water runs ahead of solids.
• Use 45° bends rather than sharp 90° turns on main drains where you can. They block less.
• Put an inspection point or manhole at every change of direction and junction on the main drain, so it can be rodded.
• Fit a vent pipe to the soil stack so traps are not sucked dry, which lets sewer smell in.
