How to Unblock a Sink or Drain (Kenya 2026): Safe DIY Steps and When to Call a Plumber

Step 1: Hot Water and Washing-Up Liquid

For a slow kitchen sink, pour a little washing-up liquid down, then hot water from a kettle. With plastic (PVC) pipes, use very hot tap water rather than boiling water, which can soften plastic joints.

Step 2: Use a Plunger

Block the overflow hole with a wet cloth, put some water in the sink to cover the plunger cup, and pump firmly 10–15 times. Repeat a few times.

Step 3: Clean the Bottle Trap

1. Put a bucket under the sink.
2. Unscrew the bottle trap (the U or bottle-shaped piece under the sink) by hand.
3. Empty and clean out the grease and debris.
4. Check the washers; replace a cracked trap.
5. Screw it back hand-tight and run water to check for leaks.

Step 4: Beyond the Trap

If the trap is clear but water still will not drain, the blockage is further down the waste pipe. A drain snake can reach it; outside, check the gully trap or manhole for leaves and silt. If several fixtures back up at once, call a plumber: the main drain may be blocked.

• Do not use harsh chemicals on old or damaged pipes.
