How PPR Joints Are Made
- Cut the pipe square with a PPR cutter and mark the socket depth.
- Heat the pipe end and the fitting together on the fusion machine's dies (around 260 °C) for the time given for that size.
- Push them together straight, without twisting, and hold still for a few seconds while the joint sets.
Common mistakes: overheating (the pipe narrows inside), twisting after joining, and dirty or wet pipe ends. Pressure-test the system before you close the walls.

What Is PPR Pipe?
PPR stands for polypropylene random copolymer. It is a rigid plastic pipe for hot and cold water inside buildings. PPR pipes and fittings are joined by heat fusion: both are melted and pushed together so they become one piece, with no glue and no threads. That is why PPR joints rarely leak. Is PPR Pipe Good for Hot Water and Drinking Water?
Yes. PPR handles hot water better than PVC, which is why it is used for showers, geysers and solar water heaters. Pipes come in pressure ratings (PN): higher-rated pipes, such as PN20, are the ones to use on hot-water lines. Check the rating on the product page. PPR does not rust and does not give the water a taste, so it is suitable for drinking water.
Can PPR Pipe Be Exposed to Sunlight?
Standard PPR is not made for long exposure to direct sun: UV light makes it brittle over time. Run PPR inside walls, in ducts, or under cover. Where a pipe must run outside, cover it with insulation, paint or a sleeve, and fix it with pipe clamps so it does not sag.
Can PPR Be Threaded or Connected to PVC and GI Pipe?
PPR pipe cannot be threaded: the wall is too soft. To connect PPR to taps, valves, tanks, GI or PVC pipe, use a male or female threaded adapter (the fittings with brass threads in this list) and a matching threaded fitting on the other pipe. A thread union lets you disconnect the joint later, for example at a pump or a water heater.
How to Cut and Join PPR Pipe (Step by Step)
- Cut the pipe square with a PPR pipe cutter.
- Mark the socket depth on the pipe so you know how far to push it.
- Heat the welding machine to working temperature (about 260 °C; the light shows when it is ready).
- Push the pipe and fitting onto the heating dies at the same time, straight, without twisting. Heat for the time the machine's chart gives for that size (a few seconds for 20 mm, longer for big sizes).
- Pull both off and push the pipe into the fitting to the mark, straight, without twisting.
- Hold still for a few seconds, then let it cool before you pressure-test the line.
Repairing a leak: cut out the damaged section, then fuse in a new piece with two sockets, or use a union. A joint that leaks cannot be reheated and reused: cut it out.
