Gauge 30 vs 28 vs 26: Which Should You Buy?
With mabati, a higher gauge number means a thinner sheet. Gauge 26 is the thickest of the three and gauge 30 the thinnest.
- Gauge 30: the cheapest. Fine for sheds, stores, kitchens and simple structures in calm areas.
- Gauge 28: the usual choice for homes and rentals. A good balance of strength and cost.
- Gauge 26: for high-wind areas, wide purlin spacing, commercial roofs and buyers who want the longest life and fewer dents.
Do not save on gauge for a family home: the price difference between gauge 30 and 28 is small compared with the cost of the whole roof, and a thicker sheet dents less and handles wind better.
How Many Metres Do I Need?
- Measure the rafter length of each roof slope, from ridge to eaves, plus the overhang. This is the length each sheet is cut to.
- Divide the width of the slope by the sheet's effective (covering) width, which is less than the full width because sheets overlap. Ask the supplier for the effective width.
- Number of sheets × sheet length = metres per slope. Add all slopes and about 5 to 10% for waste and cuts.
