Which Cable Size for What?
- 1.0 to 1.5 mm²: lighting circuits.
- 2.5 mm²: socket circuits.
- Heavier cable (4 to 6 mm² and up): instant showers, cookers and the supply to the consumer unit.
The electrician sizes each circuit to its breaker, its load and its length. Always use cable with an earth conductor where the circuit needs one.

How Wiring Goes In
- First fix: conduits and boxes are fixed into walls and slabs before plastering.
- Cabling: cables are pulled through the conduits.
- Second fix: switches, sockets, lamp holders and the consumer unit are fitted after painting.
- Testing and then connection by Kenya Power.
Use a licensed electrician: under the Energy Act 2019, electrical installation work in Kenya must be done by an electrician or contractor licensed by EPRA. Kenya Power needs a signed test certificate before connecting a new building.
