What Does T/H Mean?

T/H means tonnes per hour. One tonne of water is about 1,000 litres (one cubic metre), so a 2 T/H softener treats about 2,000 litres an hour. The four-digit number, such as 1054 or 1665, is the size of the resin tank: the first two digits are the diameter and the last two the height, in inches. So a 1665 tank is 16 by 65 inches.

How to Size a Water Softener

Peak flow: the most water you use at once, for example a boiler feed plus kitchens. Choose a T/H rating at or above it.
Daily water use and hardness: a water test gives hardness. Hardness multiplied by daily volume tells you how much the resin must remove each day, which sets the resin volume and how often it regenerates.
Regeneration frequency: aim for a softener that regenerates every few days, not several times a day. Bigger tanks regenerate less often and use salt more efficiently.

Rule of thumb: homes and small guest houses usually fit the 1 to 2 T/H range, hotels, hospitals and laundries 3 to 8 T/H, and factories and large boiler plants 10 T/H and above. Confirm with a water test and your peak flow.

Regeneration, Salt and Resin

The softener regenerates its resin with brine (salt water) from the brine tank. Keep the brine tank topped up with softener salt.
Using more salt per regeneration gives little extra capacity past a point. Set the salt dose as recommended rather than over-salting.
Resin lasts many years in homes (often 10 years or more), but typically 3 to 5 years in commercial systems that run hard every day. Chlorine and iron in the water shorten resin life.

Softener or RO?
