Grade 201 vs 304: Which Do You Need?
- 304 is the standard "18/8" food-grade stainless (about 18% chromium, 8% nickel). It resists rust well and is the right choice for food and milk contact, water treatment, outdoor use and wet areas.
- 201 replaces part of the nickel with manganese, so it is cheaper but less corrosion resistant. It suits dry, indoor and decorative work: furniture frames, trims, shelving and railings under cover.
Rule of thumb: if it touches food, milk or water, or will stay wet or outdoors, use 304. For dry indoor decoration, 201 saves money.

Working with Stainless
- Use stainless filler rods or wire and clean the weld afterwards (pickling or passivation paste) to keep it from rusting.
