Which Sealer Do You Need?

Bags and pouches, low volume: a hand or foot impulse sealer. It heats only when pressed, so it is safe and cheap to run.
Bags and pouches, high volume: a continuous band sealer. Bags feed through on a conveyor. Models with an ink coder print the batch and expiry date at the same time.
Snacks, coffee, nuts: a band sealer with nitrogen flushing pushes out oxygen, which slows staleness.
Bottles and jars: an induction sealer bonds a foil liner to the bottle mouth under the cap. It stops leaks in transport and shows if the pack has been opened.
Cups: a cup sealer puts a foil or film lid on yoghurt, juice or water cups.

Match the film to the sealer: plain polythene seals easily with an impulse sealer. Laminated and foil pouches need more heat and pressure, so check the machine is rated for them.

How Does a Heat Sealer Work?

A heat sealer presses the two layers of a plastic bag together between heated jaws or a heated wire. The plastic melts, fuses and cools into one strong seam. Hand (impulse) sealers heat only while you press the handle, so they are safe and cheap to run. Foot sealers work the same way but leave both hands free. Band (continuous) sealers carry bags along a moving belt through heated bands, so they seal at production speed, and many print a date code at the same time.

How Does an Induction Sealer Work?

The bottle is filled and capped with a foil liner inside the cap. When it passes under the induction head, an electromagnetic field heats the foil, which bonds to the rim of the bottle. The result is an airtight, leak-proof and tamper-evident seal, which is why it is used for juices, cooking oil, medicines and chemicals.

How Does a Cup Sealing Machine Work?

A filled cup sits in a holder, foil or film is laid on top, and a heated plate presses the film onto the cup rim. Manual machines seal one cup at a time; automatic lines fill and seal continuously.
