How to Fix a Leaking Pipe in Kenya: PPR, PVC, GI and HDPE Leak Repairs (2026)

A small drip wastes thousands of litres a month and can damage walls and floors. Most leaks are at joints and can be fixed quickly with the right part for the pipe type.

Quick answer: Turn off the water at the main valve, drain the line and dry it. For a threaded joint (GI or a tap), unscrew it, wrap fresh thread tape (KSh 150) or hemp (KSh 40) clockwise and re-tighten. For a cracked PPR pipe, cut out the section and fuse in new pipe with couplers; for PVC, cut out and solvent-weld a new piece; for HDPE, cut and fit compression couplers. Repair tape or putty is only a temporary fix.

Emergency Steps

  1. Close the main stop valve (or the tank outlet).
  2. Open the lowest tap to drain the line.
  3. Catch water with a bucket and protect sockets and electrics.
  4. Find exactly where the water comes from: joint, crack or fitting.

How to Re-Seal a Leaking Threaded Joint

  1. Shut off and drain the water.
  2. Unscrew the joint with pipe wrenches (one to hold, one to turn).
  3. Clean old tape, hemp and rust from the threads.
  4. Wrap thread tape 5–8 times clockwise as you look at the pipe end, or hemp with paste for GI.
  5. Screw back and tighten firmly; do not over-tighten plastic fittings.
  6. Turn on the water slowly and check for drips.

Hidden Leaks

A meter that turns when every tap is closed, damp patches on walls or a high water bill mean a hidden leak. Note the meter reading at night and again in the morning with no water used. See water meter prices and damp walls and rising damp solutions.

Worked Example: A Weeping Tap Connection

Water drips from the joint behind a kitchen tap. The owner shuts the valve, unscrews the tap, cleans the threads, wraps new thread tape six times clockwise, re-fits the tap and checks it dry the next morning. Cost: one roll of thread tape.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrapping thread tape anticlockwise (it unwinds as you tighten).
  • Relying on repair tape as a permanent fix.
  • Over-tightening plastic fittings until they crack.
  • Not shutting off the water first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you fix a leaking pipe joint?

Shut off the water, undo the joint, clean and re-seal the threads with tape or hemp, then re-tighten; plastic joints usually need re-making.

Can you fix a leaking PPR pipe without cutting?

Not permanently; cut out the damaged part and fuse in new pipe.

Which way do you wrap thread tape?

Clockwise when looking at the pipe end, the same way the fitting tightens.

How do I find a hidden water leak?

Close all taps and watch the meter; if it moves, there is a leak.

Does thread tape stop leaks?

Yes, on threaded joints when applied correctly; it does not fix cracked pipes.
