Damp walls show up as peeling paint, white salt marks, black mould and a musty smell. Painting over them never lasts; you have to stop the water first. This guide helps you find the cause and fix it.
Quick answer: Most damp walls in Kenya come from three causes: rising damp (ground water climbing the wall because there is no or a broken damp-proof course), leaks (roof, gutters, pipes) and condensation (poor ventilation). Find the cause first; then fix it with a DPM/damp-proof course, waterproof render, better drainage or ventilation, and only then repaint.
| Sign | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tide mark up to about 1 m from the floor, salts | Rising damp | Damp-proof course, waterproof plaster, lower outside ground |
| Patch near ceiling or below a window | Roof or gutter leak | Fix the leak first (see roof guide) |
| Wet patch around a pipe run | Plumbing leak | Repair the pipe or fitting |
| Black spots in bathrooms and bedrooms | Condensation | Ventilation, open windows, extractor fan |

A ground-floor bedroom has white salt marks and peeling paint up to about 80 cm on an outside wall, and the soil outside slopes towards the house. The patch is worse after rain, but the roof and pipes are dry. That pattern points to rising damp plus poor drainage. The fix: dig the soil back to 150 mm below floor level and slope it away; add a gravel strip; hack off the salty plaster; re-plaster with a waterproof mix; and let the wall dry fully before repainting with breathable paint.
Tape a small square of foil or polythene tightly to the wall for 48 hours. Moisture on the room side of the foil means condensation (improve ventilation). Moisture on the wall side means water coming through the wall (rising damp or a leak).

Rising damp from the ground, leaks from roofs, gutters or pipes, and condensation from poor ventilation.
Fix the damp-proof course, lower outside ground, re-plaster with waterproof cement and let it dry before painting.
Not on its own; the source of water must be stopped first.
Usually moisture behind the paint; find and fix the damp first.
A damp-proof membrane, usually polythene, laid under floors to block ground moisture.
Until fully dry, often several weeks for thick plaster.
