How to Use an Angle Grinder Safely: Discs, Guards and Technique (2026)

The angle grinder is one of the most useful tools in a workshop and one of the most dangerous. It spins a disc at thousands of revolutions per minute; a wrong disc or a missing guard can cause serious injuries in a second. Used correctly, it is safe and fast.

Quick answer: To use an angle grinder safely: (1) use the right disc for the job and rated at or above the grinder’s RPM, (2) unplug before changing discs, (3) keep the guard on and positioned between you and the disc, (4) wear eye and face protection, gloves and ear protection, (5) hold it with both hands using the side handle, (6) clamp the work and let the disc reach full speed before touching it. Grinders start from KSh 4,000 on Buy More Mall.

How to Change an Angle Grinder Disc

  1. Unplug the grinder (remove the battery on cordless models).
  2. Press the spindle lock and undo the outer flange with the spanner.
  3. Check the new disc is the right size and its maximum RPM is at or above the grinder’s.
  4. Fit the disc, refit the flange and tighten firmly.
  5. Release the spindle lock, refit the guard and run the grinder for a few seconds pointing away from people.

Safe Cutting and Grinding Technique

  • Clamp the work in a vice or with clamps; never hold small pieces by hand.
  • Stand to the side of the disc line, not behind it.
  • Let the disc reach full speed before it touches the work.
  • Cut with the disc straight; do not twist or force it.
  • Grind with the disc at about 15–30° to the surface.
  • Direct sparks away from people, fuel and gas cylinders.
  • Wait for the disc to stop before putting the grinder down.

Add ear protection; grinders are loud enough to damage hearing over time. Avoid loose sleeves, scarves and long hair near the disc.

Kickback: if the disc pinches in a cut, the grinder can jump back towards you. Support the work so the cut opens as you go, keep both hands on the tool and never stand in line with the disc.

Worked Example: Cutting Steel Bars for a Gate

A fundi clamps 12 mm bars on a bench, fits a new thin cutting disc rated above the grinder RPM, wears a face shield, gloves and ear defenders, and cuts with the guard between him and the disc. He switches to a grinding disc to clean the burrs; he never uses the cutting disc on its side.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Removing the guard for "better access".
  • Using a cutting disc for side grinding.
  • Fitting a large disc on a small grinder.
  • Changing discs with the grinder plugged in.
