How to Install Gutters in Kenya: Fall, Brackets and Downpipes (2026)

Gutters protect walls and foundations from roof water and let you harvest rain into a tank. Most gutter problems (overflowing, sagging, dripping joints) come from poor fall and too few brackets, both easy to get right.

Quick answer: To install gutters: measure each roof edge, fix the first bracket at the high end and the last at the downpipe end so the gutter falls about 3–5 mm per metre, run a string line and fix brackets about every 0.8–1 m, clip in the gutter with connectors, corners and end caps, then fit a dropper and downpipe to a drain or water tank. Gutter pipe costs KSh 1,400 and brackets KSh 100 on Buy More Mall.

How Many Parts Do I Need?

  • Gutter lengths: total eaves length ÷ length per piece, plus one spare.
  • Brackets: about one per metre, plus one near every joint and corner.
  • Connectors: one per joint between lengths.
  • Droppers and downpipes: at least one per run; long runs (over about 10–12 m) need a dropper at each end or in the middle.
  • Corners and end caps from your roof plan.

How to Install Gutters Step by Step

  1. Plan the downpipe positions near drains or where the tank will stand.
  2. Fix the high bracket at the far end of the run, just below the roof sheet so water drops into the gutter centre.
  3. Fix the low bracket at the dropper end, lower by about 3–5 mm per metre of run.
  4. Run a string line between them and fix the other brackets along it, about every 0.8–1 m.
  5. Clip in the dropper, then the gutter lengths, joining them with connectors. Leave the expansion gap marked on the fittings.
  6. Fit corners and end caps.
  7. Fit the downpipe with clips on the wall and lead it to a drain, soak-away or tank inlet.
  8. Test with a hose from the high end and check for drips and standing water.

Harvesting rain? fit a leaf strainer at the tank inlet and a first-flush diverter so the dirtiest first water bypasses the tank.

Gutters for Rainwater Harvesting

Every millimetre of rain on 1 m² of roof gives about 1 litre of water. A 100 m² roof in a month with 100 mm of rain can collect around 10,000 litres (less some losses). Size your tank with water tank prices and see gutter prices.

Worked Example: Gutters on a 10 m × 8 m Bungalow

The two long sides (10 m each) get gutters running to one corner each, where downpipes feed two tanks. Each run needs 10 m of gutter, 11 brackets, connectors, one end cap and one dropper. The 10 m runs fall about 4 cm from end to end.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Fixing gutters level, so water stands and overflows.
  • Too few brackets, so the gutter sags in heavy rain.
  • Gutter set too low, so water shoots over it.
  • No downpipe clips, so pipes come loose in wind.

How many downpipes do I need?

At least one per run; runs over about 10–12 m benefit from two.
