Buying children's clothes online is easy until the parcel arrives and the dress is too small. Sizes differ between countries and makers, so the safest way is to know your child's height and measurements and compare them with a chart.

Quick answer: Most children’s clothes are sized by age (0–3 months, 2 years), by height in centimetres (EU sizes such as 92 or 116) or by US toddler sizes (2T, 3T). Measure your child’s height, chest and waist, then use the chart below. When a product lists a code you do not recognise, ask the seller for the measurements in centimetres before you buy.

How to Measure Your Child

Height: stand them against a wall without shoes; mark the top of the head and measure to the floor.
Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms, tape level.
Waist: around the natural waist (just above the belly button).
Inside leg: from the crotch to the ankle, for trousers.

Unfamiliar Size Codes

Imported clothes sometimes carry codes such as "60–90" or "18–20". These are the maker's own size codes and do not always follow the chart above. Ask the seller for the chest width and length in centimetres and compare them with your child’s measurements, adding a few centimetres for comfort.
