How to Install a Toilet in Kenya (WC and Asian Toilet): Step by Step 2026

Whether you are building, renovating or replacing a cracked pan, fitting a toilet comes down to three connections: the pan to the drain, the cistern to the pan and the water supply to the cistern. Get those right and the toilet will not leak or smell.

Quick answer: To install a toilet: (1) check whether the drain comes out of the floor (S-trap) or the wall (P-trap) and buy a matching pan, (2) place the pan and mark the fixing holes, (3) connect the outlet to the 4" soil pipe with a pan connector, (4) screw the pan down and seal the base, (5) fit the cistern, flush pipe and float valve, (6) open the water and test. A P-trap toilet costs KSh 3,000 and an Asian toilet KSh 2,000 on Buy More Mall.

P-Trap vs S-Trap: Check Before You Buy

TypeDrain positionChoose when
P-trapOut through the wall behind the toiletThe soil pipe comes out of the wall
S-trapDown through the floorThe soil pipe comes up through the floor

Measure from the wall to the centre of the floor drain (for S-trap) or the height of the wall outlet (for P-trap) and compare it with the pan.

How to Install a WC Pan

  1. Turn off the water and remove the old toilet if there is one. Plug the open soil pipe with a rag to stop smells.
  2. Dry-fit the pan with the connector in the soil pipe. Check it sits level with a spirit level.
  3. Mark the fixing holes, drill and plug them.
  4. Push the pan connector firmly onto the outlet and into the soil pipe.
  5. Screw the pan down with toilet screws; tighten evenly and do not over-tighten (porcelain cracks).
  6. Fit the cistern, flush pipe and float valve, then connect the water supply.
  7. Open the water, let the cistern fill and set the float so water stops below the overflow.
  8. Flush several times and check every joint for drips. Finish with a thin bead of silicone around the base.

How to Install an Asian (Squat) Toilet

An Asian toilet is set into the floor screed. Fit the trap and connect it to the soil pipe first, bed the pan level on mortar so its rim ends flush with the finished floor, and protect it while the floor is tiled or screeded. The cistern (often a top flush cistern on the wall) feeds the pan through a flush pipe.

Smell after installing? a strong sewer smell usually means a gap at the pan connector or a missing water seal. Check the connector is fully pushed in and the trap holds water.

Worked Example: Bathroom Renovation in a Bedsitter

The old pan cracked at the base. The soil pipe comes out of the wall, so the owner buys a P-trap toilet, a float valve, toilet screws and silicone. The new pan connects to the same wall outlet, the cistern fills in under a minute and the float is set 2 cm below the overflow.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying an S-trap pan for a wall outlet (or the reverse).
  • Cementing a WC pan to the floor so it cannot be removed.
  • Over-tightening screws and cracking the pan.
  • Leaving the float too high so water runs into the overflow all day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my toilet is P-trap or S-trap?

If the drain goes into the wall it is P-trap; if it goes into the floor it is S-trap.

Can I install a toilet myself?

Yes, if the soil pipe and water supply are already in place; new drainage is a plumber’s job.

What size is a toilet soil pipe?

Toilets connect to a 4" (110 mm) soil pipe.

Why does my new toilet keep running?

The float valve is set too high or the flush valve is not sealing; see our cistern guide.

Should I seal the toilet base with silicone?

A thin bead around the base keeps out water and dirt; leave a small gap at the back so leaks show.
